Ethics Collab Funding: Call for Proposals

Ethics Collab Funding: Call for Proposals

The Institute for Practical Ethics at UVA announces Ethics Collab Funding: Call for Proposals

Applications are closed.

Goals of the Ethics Collab Funding

Thanks to a generous gift from the Richard D. Donchian Foundation, the Institute for Practical Ethics (IPE) is pleased to issue a call for proposals for Ethics Collab Funding.  These seed grants will support collaborations of scholars seeking to incorporate ethical dimensions into new or existing joint research projects and grant proposals. We are particularly interested in organizing ethical expertise to shape UVA’s high-profile investments in Grand Challenges research.

Ethics Collab Funding will support groups of 2-6 researchers from any field or department at UVA. Groups must include at least one faculty member with formal training in ethics; the IPE can assist groups in identifying ethics-trained faculty who can join their project where this would be helpful. Funds may be used, among other things, to support contractual expenses to assist in grant development, workshops and conferences, or materials.

We anticipate that individual proposals will be in the range of 5-25k per project and that we will fund 3-4 projects.  Applications for partial funding of larger projects are also welcome.  If you have a question about whether your project qualifies, or need more information please contact Rebecca Stangl.

Eligibility

Full-time faculty and graduate students from any UVA school or department of any academic rank are eligible, so long as one team member is a faculty member with formal training in ethics.

Application materials:

  • Abstract: A summary of the proposal’s aims (about 250 words)
  • Proposal Narrative: A narrative description of the proposed research project or external grant to be developed, highlighting its contribution to ethical research or knowledge.  (2-3 pages)
  • Budget: Cost estimates for all line items in the budget.  Please consult your fiscal administrators for assistance with cost estimates if needed.
  • Abbreviated curriculum vitae (2-3 pages) for each team member

Due Date: These application materials should be combined into a single pdf file and submitted electronically to the Director of the IPE, Rebecca Stangl by November 1, 2024.

Decision Process: Applications will be evaluated by the IPE Director and Faculty Advisory Committee and awards announced by December 1, 2024.
